FYI April 2026 — Trends now feel like tensions

Seven signals already rewriting 2026. None of them arrived as innovation. All of them arrived as contradiction.

Signal 01: The world stopped drinking. Mexico didn't read the memo.

While the US and Europe moderate, Mexico accelerates. 73.7% of the 12-65 population in Mexico has ever drunk, it was 71% in 2016. The urban professional woman is the growth engine.

Signal 02: The consumer used to decide. Now they delegate.

The purchase decision shifts from the human to the system. The new war isn't for share of mind, it's for share of agent. Amazon Rufus, Instacart, Shopify.

Signal 03: The body was identity. Now it's a project.

The public conversation about the body stopped being ethical and turned pharmacological. Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound reordered food, supplements and wellness.

Signal 04: Loneliness was a symptom. Today it's a category.

Eight out of ten Gen Z report loneliness. Whoever sells presence grows more than whoever sells product. Longevity Institute, Lululemon and Nike run clubs, Hush Harbor.

Signal 05: Consumption doesn't disappear. It fragments.

The consumer cut vacations but not their latte. Little treat economy: emotional micro-regulation. Starbucks, Glossier, Trader Joe's.

Signal 06: Retail comes back. For new reasons.

The store competes with the screen on quality of presence. Nike flagship, Sephora, Sprouts. Human becomes premium.

Signal 07: Low price used to be innocent. Not anymore.

Mexico raised tariffs from 19% to 33.5% for non-treaty imports. Hit to Shein, Temu and resellers. Mercado Libre +45%, Walmart Mexico 1700 units, Coppel win.

2026 thesis: someone who used to obey stopped doing so. The advantage isn't in seeing trends. It's in reading tensions before the rest do.
